TL;DR: Quick drawings of Hedgy in action, using Lamy pens. These drawings (Figures 1-4) started with quick sketches done with a broad, stubby Lamy nib (a Z50 1.5 mm), fed with Platinum Carbon Black. The Lamy Joy (Figures 5a, 5b, and 5c) is a long pen, a traditional desk pen for calligraphy. It’s steel nib is stiff and draws a crisp line. Platinum Carbon Black (Figures 6a and 6b) is a waterproof ink. You lay down contour, wait a bit for it to dry, then you can put other ink around, go over it with a water brush, even scratch; Read More

TL;DR: Making a watercolor painting in ink is not as easy as it seemed when I was a kid. Here, one of my early, but still recent, processes: (1) Ink the fountain pens, (2) Explore ink palette for the day, (3) Test ink mixtures and water brush effects, (4) Draw in pen, (5) Spread with water brush. Figure H depicts the watercolor. But, to get there, there are some steps… They are all part of a simple process I used for a while. The main advantage of this process, for me, is that it allows focusing on colors and on Read More

TL;DR: Hedgehogs appear next to wet noodles – juicy, long, flexible creatures. So, when a late-1970s Pilot Custom Grandee shows up equipped with just this kind of nib, a music nib no less, the Hedgy is bound to show up. First up: Hedgy (see Figure 1). The Pilot Custom Grandee fountain pen equipped with a music nib (see Figures 2a and 2b). This is an outstanding pen, very comfortable, good ergonomics, even the neo-classic looks – black resin, GT – are interesting. In hand, the pen is lightweight when uncapped, but balances nicely when posted. The music (MS) nib (see Read More
