TL;DR: Hedgehogs appear next to wet noodles – juicy, long, flexible creatures. So, when a late-1970s Pilot Custom Grandee shows up equipped with just this kind of nib, a music nib no less, the Hedgy is bound to show up. First up: Hedgy (see Figure 1). The Pilot Custom Grandee fountain pen equipped with a music nib (see Figures 2a and 2b). This is an outstanding pen, very comfortable, good ergonomics, even the neo-classic looks – black resin, GT – are interesting. In hand, the pen is lightweight when uncapped, but balances nicely when posted. The music (MS) nib (see Read More

TL;DR: Did you know Pallas’ cat is the grumpiest in the world? It must be true, because that’s what David Attenborough said during his Frozen Planet II coverage of this grumpy cat (for the whole series, start here). Great subject for a PILOT Elite tryout! The main feature of this pen: its pizza-slice nib! I know there’s no such technical term, bit why not name this slightly hooded nib for what it looks like – it’s a pizzle slice for me, period. See Figures 2a through 2d. Putting it all together: After the drawing and writing sample depicted in Figure Read More

TL;DR: I fished from my pen drawer a pocket pen. Turns out it’s a PILOT Elite model E95S, in Burgundy red, with an enormous 14k-gold nib, EF-tipped, stamped with “P921”. I bought it last year and never got to try it out properly. Today’s the day! History: The PILOT Elite line started in the 1960s as a prestige line, different from the SUPERs that dominated the Japanese fountain pen market in the 1950s. Long Elites were the new prestige class, but somewhere along the line, starting with the SAILOR Mini (early 1960s) and followed closely by PLATINUM, a new class Read More

TL;DR: Here, side by side, are two Pilot Capless pens, made fifty years apart (1966 and 2016). The Pilot Capless is one of the iconic fountain pens. The Capless has sleek, innovative design: push-button (knock-on) mechanism to reveal or hide the nib, mobile hatch to prevent drying yet allow the need to appear when actuated, large clip so the grip and nib stay upward in the pocket. What’s in a name? Capless or Vanishing Point? Both: The brand name appears to have changed in 1973 from Capless to Vanishing Point [CR], but today it is common for the same product Read More

TL;DR: Drawing this maple leaf was a pleasure. The main drawing instrument for this is a PILOT SUPER 200 with a 14k-gold POSTING nib. The prop fell from a tree just a couple of days before the drawing took place. Info: SUPERs were a popular, high-quality line from pen-maker PILOT, through the 1950s and early 1960s. Model SUPER 200 was the large (but not extra large) size, acting as a Montblanc 146 of its time in Japan. Featuring the PILOT fingernail nib, they were excellent writers. This pen has a 14k-gold POSTING nib. POSTING nibs of that time act typically Read More
